From its somewhat humble beginnings as a milling town, Rochester NY gradually developed into what is now the third largest city in New York State, a journey that was highlighted by its establishment as a township in the year 1817. It was from that date to the entire area was known as "Rochesterville", owing to the efforts of one Colonel Nathaniel Rochester along with two other partners. The year 1822 brought about the completion of the Erie Canal. This was a significant historical event, since it heralded the growth of Rochester NY as a business center to contend with. Along with this development came the shortening of the city's name to Rochester.
